The health department has fined 26 hospitals in Ahmedabad ₹8.06 lakh in two years after 55 complaints were registered against them for heavily charging patients, the state’s health ministry stated in the assembly on Sept 14.
55 complaints received about hospitals charging hefty amounts
During the question hour in the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha, a concern about hospitals looting patients despite them having Ayushman cards was raised.
To which, the state’s health minister, Rushikesh Patel, replied that 55 complaints have been registered, which name Ahmedabad’s several private and trust-run hospitals.
26 of these hospitals under ‘Ayushman Card Yojana’ were fined in two years for charging heavy amounts from the beneficiaries.
The minister added that to stop such incidents where the beneficiaries are asked for money by the hospitals, district complaint resolution hearings between the patients and hospital administrators are organised. These hearings are held under the guidelines provided by the government at the collector level in the steering committee meeting every Thursday.
If the complaints are found substantial, further steps are also taken against the hospital administration.
The committee heard both parties in the 55 complaints and deemed them legitimate, following which a hefty fine amounting to ₹8.06 lakh was levied on these 26 hospitals. The amount has also been collected.
